The correspondences between music counterpoint and detailed ink drawing lie in their shared focus on creating a complex, harmonious texture through the interplay between different elements. Both require technical skill and an understanding of composition and structure, as well as a balance between movement and stasis.
“A Little Sinfonia" is created through years of experimentation and development of different techniques for ink application on paper to achieve intricate, abstract details. that reflect my understanding of music composition processes and structures. The mark-making, involving varying degrees of pressure, ink viscosity, and brush strokes create distinct textures and patterns that come together to form a harmonious whole.
I became acquainted with ink when I dropped preconceived notions of what ink and artists do. I had always thought, as a left-handed writer, that dipping into ink would have disastrous consequences for me. My hand would drag across the paper. The ink would get all over my hands then on the paper in an uncontrolled mess. It was when I realized that I did not have to work from left to right across the paper, as one does with most written languages, that my light bulb moment occurred. Now, I frequently use both hands in my painting and drawing process. I move from right to left, edge to center, corner to corner, back to front, whatever it takes. Thus, the tyranny of marking direction is lifted allowing me to wander in any direction and staining my hands even more! Ink is my friend, my constant companion, and my pleasure. The delight of its dance from bottle to paper is fascinating.
Examples of works in ink and musical counterpoint have been around for centuries. Traditions, schools, genres, and guidelines have developed out of the prevalence of both realms of creative urgency. I love the challenge of questioning what is considered traditional in art by exploring new forms of expression and pushing the limits of each medium. “A Little Sinfonia" paves the way for a new personal direction of working with ink and paper art. The piece highlights my desire to create a visual counterpoint that invites the viewer to experience its complexity and beauty.
The significance of this art work lies in its ability to challenge preconceptions about what art and music can be. By pushing the boundaries of ink, this work invites us to view art in a new light and explore new creative realms. Music and the visual arts continue to remind us that transdisciplinary concepts are boundless and that creativity lies in the ability to break free from convention and create something remarkable.
